An effective strategy to lower shrink level is to implement a Loss Prevention plan that includes a Loss Prevention Officer.

There are three top causes of shrinkage. Administrative errors, such as errors in pricing, bad record keeping, or cash counting mistakes can all add up over time and cause a great deal of loss. Employee theft is another common cause of shrink. In fact, it accounts for almost half of all retail shrinkage (approx five Billion a year in Canada)

Store personnel have the same legal authority as any citizen—no more, no less. All actions must respect individual rights and comply with the law.

Only proceed with search if probable grounds. It is safer to detain and await police assistance.

Probable Cause: Staff must directly observe the individual taking merchandise.

Confrontation: Approach only after they exit, identify yourself clearly.

Detention: Escort the individual back inside with at least two staff present to prevent escape.
